Our Story

Dawn's mom, Linda, is living with Alzheimer's Dementia - as did Dawn's grandmother, Audrey. When we became solely responsible for Dawn's mom in 2022, it quickly became clear we would not be able to work, maintain our life, and care for Linda. We made the difficult choice to find a better place for Linda to live. This would enable us to continue our quality of life and reserve our energy and resources for the fun things with Linda, focusing solely on her quality of life.

We felt we were set up with the best possible circumstances: we are educated, motivated, we had enough money. Dawn's mom even had Long Term Care Insurance that would cover more than $8,500 per month, we thought we had it made.

We set out to find a nurturing and healthy environment that specialized in memory care. We quickly discovered (after touring more than 15 homes in the Seattle area) it was going to be more difficult than we had imagined. While we had let go of the notion that no home would provide the care we really wanted for Linda, we had held on to the idea that we could find a place that would provide a high quality of life and a sense of autonomy. Unfortunately, we still haven't found this place in the U.S.

For several months, which turned into years, we kept asking ourselves "why someone doesn't build something better?..." we finally turned the question on ourselves and asked "Why don't we build something better?...."

We've spent a lot of time with Linda to better understand what her needs might be. While she has changed a lot in the past three years there are some constants. One of the biggest being that she LOVES to walk and has for as long as I can remember. Early on we would go for walks with her and talk about all kinds of things. We hired people to come and walk with her so she had more variety and more reasons to get outside. We have also taken her on multiple trips (via car, train, and plane) as well as experimented with the different ways to keep in touch with her while we are traveling.

We've also been researching places around the world to see who is "doing dementia care better". We have culminated what we've learned and are moving forward with our findings. We have broken down our plans into phases and are in phase one right now. If you'd like to learn more about what we've learned or would like to collaborate please contact us, we'd love to hear from you! We will continue to walk with Linda and we invite you to walk with us too.

using virtual reality

Using virtual reality, staff experience what it is like to have dementia in a common situation:
Getting up in the middle of the night to use the toilet
Professional caregivers who experience dementia using VR:
  • More quickly resolve situations,

  • More easily communicate with residents, and

  • Accomplish more care in less time

Experiencing dementia using virtual reality (VR)

Why it matters:
  • It's almost impossible to know how to handle every resident situation.

  • Experiencing dementia gives staff insight and empathy that naturally leads to problem-solving on a whole new level.

Start with a single experience that drastically improves staff's ability to respond to situations - virtual reality

Staff must overcome obstacles to successfully get to the bathroom. Throughout, they get a full view of how the world may look and feel to a person who is living with dementia.

Staff naturally apply what they have seen and heard to their residents, leading to ephiphanies and a-ha moments as they can't help but see new ways of helping the residents in their care.

Understanding Dementia Together

We've been traveling the world looking for a better model for living arrangements and training tools for those caring for, working with or simply loving people who are living with dementia. What we have found is places in the world that are building communities for individuals living with dementia that are focused on environment and creating higher quality of life for those in the community living with dementia. We've also found training tools and perspectives that put the person living with dementia at the forefront of every thought and interaction: Person-centered care.

Focusing on the environment helps to meet the needs of those living with dementia by providing a normal living environment. An important aspect of this focus includes extensive and compassionate training for loved ones and caregivers of those living with dementia to better understand what it might be like to live with dementia.

Creating a community built around the needs of people living with dementia changes interactions, improves quality of life, and decreases confusion.

We've learned more about what it is like to live dementia. We've experienced some amazing training tools, read about people sharing their stories about what it's like to be living with dementia. As a result we are learning more about improving the quality of life for those living with dementia (and their caregivers).

We invite you to walk with us. We can learn from each other.

We take Linda on adventures and experience together what is happening right now. Sometimes it's walking on the beach, meeting up with old friends or just cooking dinner together. Whatever it is we do it side by side, learning from each other all the time.
